Church Kneeler Re-Upholstery

We replace worn kneeler fabric and padding so congregations can use them comfortably again.

Kneelers wear out from regular use. Padding compresses and loses comfort. Fabric tears, stains, or fades. Wooden frames get damaged. Years of worship take their toll on these pieces. We restore kneelers so they can continue serving your congregation properly. Old padding is removed and replaced with fresh, supportive foam. Worn fabric is stripped away and new, durable church-grade material is fitted. Wooden frames are repaired if needed. Every kneeler is rebuilt to provide comfort and last for years to come. We work with pew kneelers, prie dieux, altar rail kneelers, and communion rail cushions. We've been re-upholstering church kneelers since 1962, serving churches across London and throughout Britain.

How We Re-Upholster Church Kneelers

Each kneeler is stripped down, rebuilt, and recovered properly. The work varies depending on the type of kneeler and its condition.

Assess the Kneeler

We check the frame for damage, look at how the padding has compressed, and examine the fabric condition to see what's needed.

Remove Old Materials

Worn fabric and old padding are stripped away completely. This lets us see the frame clearly and start fresh.

Repair Frames

Damaged wood is repaired, loose joints are reglued, broken pieces are fixed or replaced, and the frame is prepared for new padding.

Install New Padding

High density foam is cut to size and fitted properly. The padding provides support and comfort that lasts.

Apply New Fabric

Church-grade upholstery fabric is stretched tight and fitted evenly. The fabric is secured properly so it stays in place through regular use.

Check Attachment

For pew kneelers, we make sure hinges work properly and the kneeler sits correctly. For prie dieux, we check stability and make sure everything is secure.

Final Inspection

Every kneeler is checked to make sure it's comfortable, stable, and ready to go back into service.

Most re-upholstery work takes 1 to 3 weeks depending on the number of kneelers. Larger projects may take longer. We keep you updated.

How Projects Work

Most kneeler re-upholstery happens at our location. Here's how the process usually works.

For Prie Dieux and Portable Kneelers These can be dropped off or sent to us. Pack carefully if posting, or bring them directly to us in Harrow.

For Pew Kneelers Pew kneelers are usually removed, brought here for re-upholstery, and returned. Some churches prefer to remove them themselves. We can advise on the best approach for your project.

For Large Projects Churches with many pews may need work done in stages so the church can continue holding services. We can discuss scheduling that works for your needs.

Collection and Return For churches in London and surrounding areas, we can arrange collection and return of kneelers. For churches further away, we'll discuss the best way to handle transport.

Questions About Kneeler Re-Upholstery

Here are questions churches commonly ask about re-upholstering kneelers.

How long does re-upholstered padding last?

High density foam padding typically lasts 10 to 15 years with regular church use. How long it lasts depends on how often the kneelers are used and how well they're maintained.

Can you match our existing fabric colour?

We'll do our best to match or get close to your existing colour. Bring a sample or send photos and we'll show you fabric options that work. Exact matches aren't always possible as fabrics change over time, but we can find something that coordinates well.

Do you repair damaged kneeler frames?

Yes. Frame repairs are included as part of re-upholstery work. Broken wood is replaced, loose joints are reglued, and damaged sections are repaired or replaced so the kneeler is structurally sound.

Can you re-upholster just some of our pew kneelers?

Yes. Some churches re-upholster a few pews at a time rather than doing everything at once. This spreads the cost and means the church doesn't lose all its kneelers during the work.

Is the fabric easy to clean?

Church-grade upholstery fabrics are designed to be durable and relatively easy to maintain. Vinyl wipes clean easily. Fabric can be vacuumed and spot cleaned. We can advise on care based on which material you choose.

Do the materials meet fire safety requirements?

Yes. All fabrics and padding we use meet flame retardancy standards required for church furnishings. This is standard for commercial upholstery materials.

How do we remove pew kneelers for re-upholstery?

Most pew kneelers are attached with hinges or brackets that can be unscrewed. If you're not sure how to remove them safely, we can advise or arrange to handle the removal ourselves for churches in our area.

Can you work around our service schedule?

Yes. We understand churches need to continue holding services. We can work in stages, doing sections of pews at a time, or schedule the work during periods when the church has fewer services.

Can we visit to discuss our project?

Yes. For churches with larger projects or specific requirements, meeting in person helps. We're in Harrow, London. Call 07391 007 123 to arrange a time to discuss your kneeler re-upholstery needs.
