Copper Plating

We've been copper plating for customers across London and the UK since 1962

We use copper plating in two main ways. First, as a base layer beneath gold, silver, nickel, or chrome. Copper helps other metals bond properly and creates a smooth foundation for the final finish. Second, as a standalone decorative finish with its warm, rich colour. We work on architectural features, decorative panels, and pieces where that copper look is exactly what's needed. The copper is applied through electroplating and can be left natural or protected with a clear lacquer to slow tarnish. Whether you need copper as preparation for another finish or as the finished surface itself, we handle it properly.

Why Choose Us for Copper Plating

Copper plating requires understanding how it works with different metals and what comes next. We've been doing this since 1962, using copper both as a foundational layer and as a finish in its own right.

How We Copper Plate Your Items

Copper plating can serve different purposes depending on what you're restoring. Here's how we approach the work.

Assess the Base Metal

Not all metals accept copper the same way. We check what your item is made from and prepare it accordingly so the copper bonds properly.

Clean and Prep

The surface gets thoroughly cleaned and treated. Any oils, dirt, or oxidation must be removed before plating.

Apply Copper

Using electroplating, we deposit copper onto the surface. The thickness depends on whether it's being used as a base layer for another metal or as the final finish.

Polish or Finish

If copper is the final surface, we polish it to bring out the warm colour and smooth the finish. For base layers, we ensure the surface is even and ready for the next plating step.

Protect if Needed

Decorative copper can be lacquered to slow tarnish and protect the finish. Base layers don't need this since they'll be covered by another metal.

Turnaround depends on the item and whether copper is the final finish or part of a multi-layer process. Most single-layer copper work takes 1 to 2 weeks.

What Can Be Copper Plated

Copper works on many metals and serves different roles depending on your needs. Here's what we commonly work on.

Architectural and Household Features

Door handles, knobs, railings, light fittings, towel rails, decorative panels, and metal fixtures.

Decorative and Display Pieces

Trays, vases, sculptures, and items where the copper colour is part of the design.

Base Layer Applications

Items being prepared for gold, silver, nickel, or chrome plating. Copper creates a smooth foundation that helps the final finish bond and look right.

Antique and Vintage Items

Restored architectural salvage, period metalwork, vintage fittings, and pieces needing period-accurate copper finishes.

Industrial and Functional Parts

Components needing copper for conductivity, corrosion resistance, or as part of a multi-layer protective coating.

Copper doesn't bond well to certain metals without special treatment. If you're unsure whether your item can be copper plated, send photos and we'll advise.

Anyone Needing Copper Whether as a foundation for other metals or as the finished surface, we help customers across London and the UK get the copper finish they need.

What Does Copper Plating Cost

Pricing depends on size, whether copper is the final finish or a base layer, and how much prep work is involved. Base layers are usually straightforward. Decorative copper finishes take more time to polish and finish properly.

Send photos showing what you need done. Let us know if copper is the final surface or if it's preparation for another metal. We'll quote based on that.

Most copper work takes 1 to 2 weeks. Items needing multiple layers (copper plus another finish) take longer. We'll confirm timings when we provide your quote.

Common Questions About Copper Plating

Here are the questions we hear most often about copper plating. If yours isn't listed, get in touch.

Why would I use copper as a base layer instead of plating directly with the final metal?

Copper creates a smooth, even surface that other metals bond to better. It fills minor imperfections in the base metal and gives a uniform foundation. This results in a better final finish, especially for chrome, nickel, gold, or silver. Without copper underneath, the top layer can look uneven or peel over time.

Will copper tarnish or change colour over time?

Yes. Copper reacts naturally with air and moisture, developing a patina that darkens the colour. If you want to keep the bright copper look, we apply a clear protective lacquer after plating. This slows tarnish significantly. Without lacquer, copper will darken and eventually develop a greenish patina, which some people prefer for its aged appearance.

Can copper be plated onto any metal?

Most metals accept copper plating, but some need special preparation first. Steel, brass, and bronze take copper easily. Aluminium, zinc, and stainless steel need extra surface treatment before copper will bond properly. Send us photos of what you have and we'll let you know if any special prep is needed.

Is copper plating suitable for items that get handled regularly?

It depends. Copper as a base layer beneath nickel, chrome, or another hard metal works well for frequently handled items. Decorative copper on its own is softer and will show wear, scratches, and fingerprints over time. For door handles, railings, or items touched daily, we usually recommend copper as a base with a harder finish on top.

Can you match a specific copper colour or tone?

Copper has a natural warm reddish-brown colour, but the exact shade can vary slightly depending on thickness and how it's polished. If you need to match existing copper work, send us photos and we'll do our best to get close. Patina and age also affect colour, so older copper often looks different from freshly plated copper even with the same process.

How thick is the copper layer you apply?

Thickness depends on the purpose. Base layers for other finishes are thinner since they'll be covered. Decorative copper finishes are thicker to allow for polishing and durability. We adjust based on what you're having done and how the item will be used.

Can I drop my items off in person?

Yes. We're in Harrow, London. Bringing items directly works well, especially if you want to discuss whether copper is right for your project or if another finish would suit better. Call 07391 007 123 first to arrange a time.

What's the difference between decorative copper plating and copper used as a base layer?

Decorative copper is the final finish. We polish it to look its best and often apply lacquer for protection. Base layer copper is hidden beneath another metal, so appearance doesn't matter as much. Its job is to create a smooth surface and help the top layer bond properly.

Can you restore items that were originally copper plated?

Yes. We strip the old copper, prep the surface, and apply fresh copper plating. If the item was originally copper plated and you want to return it to that finish, we can replicate the look and protect it properly.

Is copper plating suitable for outdoor items?

Copper exposed to weather will develop a patina and eventually turn green. If that's the look you want, copper works outdoors. If you want to keep the bright copper appearance, a protective lacquer helps, but even with protection, outdoor copper will change over time. For items that need to stay bright and resist weather, we usually recommend nickel or chrome over copper as a base.
