Custom Plating
We handle unusual finishes, mixed metals, and specialist requests others won't take on.

We handle custom plating work that needs something different. Mixed metal finishes on one piece, colour matching to existing metalwork, aged or patina effects, period-accurate finishes for restoration projects, or combinations of metals that suit specific designs. If you have something unusual in mind or need to match a finish you can't find elsewhere, we'll work with you to figure out what's possible. We've been problem-solving custom plating requests since 1962, and most projects that seem difficult just need the right approach and someone willing to take the time. Send us photos, explain what you're looking for, and we'll tell you honestly whether we can do it and what to expect.

How We Handle Custom Plating
Custom work doesn't follow a standard process. Each project is different. Here's how we typically approach it.
Understand What You Need
Send photos of what you're working with and explain what finish you want. If you have a sample or reference, that helps. We'll discuss what's possible and what challenges might come up.
Assess the Item
We look at the base metal, condition, and any existing finishes. Some metals accept certain plating better than others. We'll let you know if prep work is needed or if adjustments to your plan make sense.
Develop the Approach
For mixed finishes, we plan which metals go where and in what order. For colour matching, we test samples first. For patina or aged effects, we discuss how much variation is acceptable since these finishes aren't perfectly uniform.
Test if Needed
Complex or unusual finishes sometimes need testing first. We'll let you know upfront if testing is required and what that involves.
Complete the Work
Once the approach is clear, we carry out the plating. Custom work often takes longer than standard finishes due to the extra steps and attention involved.
Review and Adjust
We check the result against what you asked for. If adjustments are needed and possible, we make them. Custom work sometimes needs fine-tuning to get it right.
Turnaround depends entirely on the project. Simple custom work might take 2 to 3 weeks. Complex jobs with testing or multiple finishes can take longer. We'll give realistic timescales once we understand what's involved.
Types of Custom Plating We Handle
Custom plating covers a wide range of requests. Here's what we commonly work on, though we're open to discussing anything unusual.
Mixed Metal Finishes
Combining different metals on one piece. Examples include copper and chrome on architectural features, gold and silver on decorative items, or nickel and brass on vintage fittings.
Colour Matching
Matching existing metalwork in your property or collection. You send a sample or photos, and we aim to replicate the colour and finish as closely as possible.
Aged and Patina Finishes
Creating worn, aged, or patina effects on new or restored items. Useful for period properties, antique restoration, or matching existing aged metalwork.
Period-Accurate Restoration
Replicating original finishes on antiques or historical pieces where modern bright finishes wouldn't look right. This includes toned gold, aged silver, or vintage brass.
Architectural and Decorative Projects
Custom finishes for railings, door furniture, light fittings, panels, and architectural details where standard finishes don't suit the design.
One-Off and Unusual Requests
Projects that don't fit into standard categories. If you have something specific in mind and aren't sure it's possible, get in touch and we'll discuss it.
Not all custom requests are achievable. Some metal combinations don't work. Some finishes can't be matched exactly. We'll always be honest about what's realistic before you commit to anything.
Who Needs Custom Plating
Custom plating serves customers with specific needs that standard finishes don't solve. Architects, restorers, designers, collectors, and homeowners all come to us with unusual requests.
Architects and Designers Creating custom finishes for architectural projects where standard chrome, nickel, or brass don't suit the design vision.
Antique Restorers and Conservators Replicating period finishes on historical pieces or matching worn finishes on items being restored to original condition.
Property Owners and Renovators Matching existing metalwork in period homes or creating custom finishes for unique interior design projects.
Collectors and Enthusiasts Restoring rare items with finishes that need replicating or creating custom finishes for display pieces.
Anyone with Unusual Requirements Projects that other platers won't handle or where standard finishes don't achieve what you're looking for.
What Does Custom Plating Cost
Custom work pricing varies widely depending on complexity, testing requirements, and how much trial and refinement is involved. Simple colour matching costs less than complex mixed finishes with multiple metals.
Send detailed photos and describe exactly what you need. Include samples or references if you have them. We'll assess the work and give you a realistic quote. Custom jobs often cost more than standard plating due to the extra time and attention involved.
Turnaround depends on the project. We'll give realistic timescales once we understand what's involved. Rushing custom work usually compromises quality, so we build in enough time to get it right.
How to Send Items to Us

Send Insured Always use tracked and fully insured delivery. Custom or valuable items should have appropriate insurance coverage.
Include References If you're colour matching or replicating a finish, include samples, photos, or detailed descriptions. The more information we have, the better the result.

Common Questions About Custom Plating
Here are the questions we hear most often about custom plating. If yours isn't here, just get in touch.
Can you match a finish from a photo?
We can get close, but photos don't always show exact colours and tones accurately. Lighting, screen settings, and camera quality all affect how finishes appear. Sending a physical sample gives much better results. If you only have photos, we'll do our best and send photos of test samples for approval before plating the actual item.
How exact will colour matching be?
We aim for 80% to 95% accuracy depending on the finish. Some metals and patinas have natural variation, so perfect matching isn't always possible. If exact matching is crucial, we'll test first and show you samples before proceeding. We'll always be honest about how close we can get.
Can you combine different metals on one item?
Yes, but it depends on the design and base metal. Some areas can be masked while others are plated. Complex designs with intricate details are harder to mask cleanly. Send photos showing what you want and we'll explain what's achievable.
Do aged or patina finishes look the same on every item?
No. Aged finishes have natural variation. The base metal, how patina is applied, and the item's shape all affect the final look. Some variation is part of the authentic aged appearance. If you need consistency across multiple items, we can aim for similar tones, but exact uniformity isn't realistic for patina work.
Can you replicate antique finishes exactly?
We can get very close. Replicating worn gold, aged silver, or vintage brass involves controlled patina and finishing techniques. The result looks period-appropriate but won't be identical to centuries of natural aging. For restoration work, this is usually acceptable. If perfect replication is essential, we'll discuss limitations upfront.
How long does custom plating take?
It varies. Simple custom work might take 2 to 3 weeks. Complex projects with testing, mixed finishes, or colour matching can take 4 to 6 weeks or longer. We'll give realistic timescales once we understand your project. Rushing custom work usually compromises quality.
Can I see samples before you plate my item?
For complex or expensive projects, testing on sample pieces first makes sense. We'll discuss whether testing is needed when we assess your request. There's usually a cost for test samples, but it reduces risk on valuable or important items.
What if the result isn't what I expected?
We work closely with customers throughout custom projects to avoid surprises. If something doesn't match expectations, we'll discuss why and what can be adjusted. Some changes are possible after plating. Others require stripping and starting over. Clear communication upfront prevents most issues.
Can I visit to discuss my project in person?
Yes. For custom work, meeting face to face often helps. You can bring samples, explain what you're looking for, and we can discuss options directly. Call 07391 007 123 to arrange a time. We're in Harrow, London.
Do you turn down custom requests?
Sometimes. If a finish isn't achievable, if metals won't bond properly, or if expectations can't realistically be met, we'll say so. We'd rather turn work down than deliver something that doesn't meet your needs. We'll always explain why something won't work and suggest alternatives if possible.
