Stainless Steel Polishing
We remove scratches, restore smoothness, and bring back the even appearance of stainless steel.

We restore dull, scratched, or stained stainless steel to a smooth, clean finish. Railings, balustrades, handrails, kitchen equipment, architectural features, and fabricated items. Stainless steel is harder than brass or aluminium, so polishing it properly takes the right equipment and experience. We bring out mirror finishes with high reflection or satin finishes with a softer appearance. The polishing removes surface marks, blends welds, and improves corrosion resistance by smoothing imperfections where dirt and moisture collect. We've been polishing stainless steel since 1962, working on everything from residential handrails to commercial installations. Whether your stainless steel has lost its shine or needs refreshing after years of use, we handle the work properly.
Why Choose Us for Stainless Steel Polishing
Stainless steel polishing takes patience and skill. It's harder to work with than softer metals, and getting a smooth, even finish requires experience. We've been doing this for over 60 years, and every piece is handled by our experienced team.

How We Polish Stainless Steel
Stainless steel polishing isn't just wiping it down. It's harder than most metals, so achieving a smooth finish takes proper equipment and technique. Here's how we do it.
Assess Condition
We check how scratched, stained, or dull the stainless steel is. Deep scratches may not come out completely, but we remove what's possible without thinning the metal too much.
Clean Thoroughly
The stainless steel gets cleaned to remove dirt, oils, grease, and surface grime. Polishing dirty metal just spreads contamination.
Remove Scratches and Marks
Using abrasive compounds and buffing wheels, we work out scratches, weld marks, and surface damage. This stage takes time because stainless steel is hard.
Refine the Surface
Progressively finer compounds smooth the surface further. This removes the marks left by earlier polishing stages and prepares the steel for final finishing.
Final Polish
For mirror finishes, we polish until the steel reflects clearly. For satin finishes, we stop earlier to keep a softer, brushed appearance. The finish depends on what you need.
Final Clean
After polishing, the stainless steel is cleaned again to remove any polishing compound residue. This leaves the surface clean and ready to use.
Most stainless steel polishing takes 1 to 2 weeks. Larger installations or heavily scratched items may take longer.

Common Questions About Stainless Steel Polishing
Here are the questions customers ask us most often about stainless steel polishing. If yours isn't here, get in touch.
What's the difference between mirror and satin finishes on stainless steel?
Mirror finish is highly reflective and shows clear reflections. It takes more polishing to achieve. Satin finish is softer with a brushed appearance and less reflection. Both are durable, but mirror finishes show fingerprints and marks more easily. Satin finishes hide marks better.
Can badly scratched stainless steel be restored?
Light to moderate scratches can usually be polished out. Deep scratches or gouges may improve but often won't disappear completely. We remove what's possible without thinning the steel too much. Send photos and we'll assess what can be done.
Will polishing remove stains and discolouration from stainless steel?
Most surface stains and discolouration can be polished out. Heat discolouration, rust staining from other metals, and some chemical marks come out with polishing. Deep staining or corrosion may not fully remove. Send photos and we'll let you know what to expect.
Can you blend welds on fabricated stainless steel?
Yes. We blend welds so they're less visible and match the surrounding surface. This is common on fabricated items, railings, and custom pieces. The weld area is polished until it flows smoothly into the rest of the steel.
How long does polished stainless steel stay shiny?
Indoors, polished stainless steel can stay shiny for years with basic cleaning. Outdoors or in coastal areas, it will dull faster due to weather and salt exposure. Regular cleaning with mild detergent helps maintain the shine longer.
Can you polish stainless steel railings in place?
For small touch ups, sometimes. For full restoration, we prefer items removed so we can polish them properly. Polishing in place is messy, difficult, and results aren't as good. If removal isn't possible, we can discuss options.
Does polishing improve corrosion resistance?
Yes. Polishing smooths the surface, which reduces places where dirt, moisture, and contaminants collect. A smooth surface is less prone to corrosion than a rough, scratched one. The chromium in stainless steel still does the main corrosion protection, but polishing helps.
Can I drop my stainless steel off in person?
Yes. We're in Harrow, London. Bringing items directly often works better, especially for larger pieces. Call 07391 007 123 first to arrange a time.
Will polishing change the thickness or strength of the stainless steel?
Polishing removes a tiny amount of surface metal, but not enough to affect thickness or strength. Items polished repeatedly over decades may show slight wear, but normal polishing doesn't compromise structural
Can you polish stainless steel kitchen worktops?
Yes, but worktops usually need polishing onsite since they're fixed in place. We prefer to assess these in person to discuss what's achievable. Small sections or edges that can be removed polish more easily than full worktops.
